Deaf, Organized & Thriving: How I Spring Clean My Life (Not Just My Apartment)

It’s spring, and you know what that means—time to declutter, freshen up, and reset. But I’m not just talking about wiping down the kitchen counters. I’m talking about a total life reset.

As a Deaf woman juggling work, relationships, goals, and the ups and downs of daily life, I’ve learned that spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing baseboards. It’s about letting go of what’s draining you and making space for what supports you.

This post isn’t just about how I organize my closet (though that’s in here too). It’s about the systems, habits, and mindsets that keep me focused, less stressed, and fully in control—even when life gets loud, messy, or overwhelming.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Reset More Than Just Your Space

Spring is a natural motivator. Warmer days, more light, fresh air—it helps clear out the mental fog too.

But what I really love about spring? It’s forgiving. You can start over in spring without needing a “New Year” or big announcement. It’s low-pressure, high-impact.

For the Deaf community, spring often means prepping for summer events, Deaf camps, family visits, job changes, graduations—and everything in between. So having systems in place now helps you stay grounded and present for all of it.

My Life Spring Cleaning Framework (That Works Every Year)

Think of this as your life reset checklist—from physical stuff to mental clutter to digital chaos.

1. Declutter What I Touch Every Day

  • Purses, tote bags, backpacks
  • Wallets and ID holders
  • Keys, tech gear, chargers
  • Notebooks or planners

📝 Mini-challenge: Take 20 minutes today to dump your bag. Toss old receipts, organize cords, and put back only what you use. You’ll feel 10x lighter.

2. Simplify My Schedule

I review:

  • My weekly and monthly commitments
  • What’s draining vs. what’s energizing
  • Which meetings/emails/texts I can batch or cut

✅ I use visual ASL-friendly calendars (included in the free toolkit!) to see everything clearly without having to rely on tiny font or cluttered text.

Avoiding Overwhelm: Progress Beats Perfection

Let’s be honest: it’s easy to start strong and burn out by Day 3.

Here’s what I do differently now:

🍃 Use the Rule of 3

Each week, I focus on:

  • 1 space to clean
  • 1 habit to improve
  • 1 thing to let go of (a task, belief, or guilt)

This keeps things doable and builds momentum. You don’t need a 20-step plan. You need consistent small wins.

📆 Use a Habit Tracker (Yours is in the Toolkit!)

Tracking helps me visually see progress, even when it feels slow. I print mine out and hang it where I’ll see it daily (bathroom mirror or fridge).

How I Tidy Up My Tech (and Keep My Mind Clear)

Our phones and laptops carry so much invisible clutter. Here’s what I do every April:

📱 Phone Cleanup Checklist:

  • Delete unused apps
  • Organize home screen into “Action” folders (Communicate, Plan, Relax)
  • Turn off notifications (Yes. All of them.)

💻 Laptop Reset:

  • Clear desktop files
  • Unsubscribe from email lists I don’t read
  • Sort ASL video bookmarks by topic (Health, Education, Fun, etc.)

This helps me spend less time scrolling and more time living.

Building Consistency (Even When Life Gets Chaotic)

I used to think I just needed more motivation. But the real trick is consistency—and structure that works with how I communicate and navigate the world.

Here’s what works for me and a lot of my Deaf friends:

🌟 Choose Visual Systems That Work FOR You

  • Color-coded calendars
  • High-contrast lists
  • ASL wall charts
  • Symbol-based meal planners

These aren’t just cute—they help reduce decision fatigue.

🤝 Build Support Into Your Routines

  • Check in with a friend once a week
  • Use a video diary (even private ones)
  • Share your wins (big or small) on your favorite Deaf community page or group

Connection makes habits stick. Don’t go it alone.

Why This Matters for the Deaf Community

A lot of us in the Deaf world are already used to adapting. We’re problem-solvers by nature. But that can also lead to burnout if we don’t have clear systems in place.

Here’s why spring cleaning your life matters so much in our community:

🔁 Reduced Decision Fatigue

When so much energy goes into navigating communication (captioning, interpreting, clarity), organizing the rest of your life helps free up that mental load.

🧠 Mental Clarity for Advocacy

When I’m clear and grounded, I advocate better. I have the energy to speak up in meetings, email school boards, or join community causes.

💬 More Energy for Connection

When my space and mind are clear, I’m more open to connecting—whether it’s interpreting for a DeafBlind friend or attending a Deaf poetry night.

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making space to be fully present, fully yourself.

What I Do Every Spring Without Fail

To keep it practical, here’s my non-negotiable Spring Life Reset Checklist:

Final Thoughts: It’s Okay to Take It Slow

If all you do today is empty your backpack or set up one visual tracker, that’s enough. You’re building momentum.

Spring is about renewal, not perfection. You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do something—and do it in a way that works for you.

Here’s what I know for sure: when I feel organized, I feel powerful. When my space is calm, my mind is clear. When I’m thriving, I’m able to show up fully—for myself, for my people, and for the Deaf community.

You deserve that too.
